Senior/ Principal Structural Engineer - Sydney

  • Full project ownership start to finish, no handing off to someone else once the client relationship gets interesting
  • Direct line to architects, certifiers, builders and councils, you're the point of contact, not a name on a drawing
  • Path to Associate for the right person, with fee proposals and business development part of the role

You've done the calcs, signed off the drawings, and someone else took the call from the client.

If that's starting to grate, this one's worth a look.

This is a small-to-medium Sydney consultancy that's been running for over three decades across residential, commercial, industrial and civil work, plus forensic and remedial investigations when things go wrong on-site. No corporate layers. You'll deal directly with the people who run the place.

You'll take projects from the first client conversation through to completion. That means liaising with architects, certifiers, builders and councils yourself, running site inspections, writing the technical reports, and making the calls on risk and design without waiting on sign-off from three levels above you.

You'll also review junior engineers' work and mentor as you go, and if business development interests you, there's room to bring in your own network and build toward Associate.

This won't suit you if you want a big multidisciplinary project with a narrow, segmented role. If you've spent your career on model production without much client contact, you'll find the exposure here confronting rather than exciting. If that's not you, keep scrolling.

If it is, you'll get WFH one day a week once you're through probation, flexible start and finish times, and a firm that wants engineers who can own a project, not just run the numbers on one.

What you'll bring:

  • 8-15+ years post-graduate experience, Senior to Associate level
  • Minimum 5 years in Australian consulting engineering environments
  • Strong knowledge of Australian Standards and NCC requirements
  • CPEng or actively working towards it
  • NSW Design Practitioner registration an advantage
  • Comfortable running residential, small commercial, industrial and civil projects independently
  • Experience with SpaceGass, RAPT, Tekla Tedds or Bluebeam
  • Existing Sydney/NSW network and experience preparing fee proposals, if BD is your thing
