Picture a family-owned engineering consultancy that's been going for 30 years. They do structural, geotech and hydraulics under one roof, out of an office on Brisbane's southside.

That last part matters. Most structural and geotech firms don't have a hydraulics team at all. Here, it's one of the main things that sets them apart.

Most of their work is repeat residential projects for some of Australia's biggest home builders. They're also setting up a new department for high-end architectural homes.

Your time is your own

Most consultancies say they care about work-life balance. This one acts on it.

Managers tell people not to stay back. They don't want you taking work home. They keep an eye on workloads so the targets stay realistic.

So when you finish for the day, you're actually finished.

The role

The hydraulics team has more work than it can handle. They've had to turn down flood modelling jobs, even though flood modelling was a service they planned to grow this year.

You'll lead stormwater design and overland flow modelling on land development projects. That means pre and post development analysis: where the water goes, where it collects, and what needs to be done about it.

You'll build models for existing and proposed conditions, run the scenarios, and explain the results in plain English to planners, designers and clients who aren't engineers.

You'll work closely with the hydraulics manager and a couple of junior engineers who'll learn a lot from you.

And if you haven't done much building hydraulics (roofwater, sanitary drainage, water supply, fire, gas), you'll pick that up here too. That makes you a far more complete hydraulics engineer, and far harder to replace.

What's needed

• 5+ years in stormwater design and overland flow modelling
• Hands-on DRAINS experience, plus GIS or modelling tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, HEC-HMS or SWMM
• Experience assessing the impact of land development, ideally on residential projects
• A degree in civil, environmental or water resources engineering, or something similar

A quick word on the interview. There are no trick questions and no jargon tests. They'll put a real plan in front of you and ask how you'd approach it. If you know your stuff, you'll probably enjoy it.

• $130,000 to $150,000 plus super
