The expected salary for a Sustainability consultant varies as you become more experienced.

  • Newly trained graduate Sustainability consultant can earn $60,000 - $67,000
  • Junior Sustainability consultant can earn $65,000 - $80,000
  • Intermediate Sustainability consultant with some experience can earn $80,000 - $105,000
  • Senior Sustainability consultants can earn $110,000 - $140,000.*
  • Associate Sustainability consultants can earn $145,000 - $165,000.*
  • Principal Sustainability consultant can earn $160,000 - $190,000.*
  • Associate Directors can earn $180,000 - $220,000.*
  • Directors can earn $240,000 - $300,000.*

Hours and salary depend on location, employer and any overtime you may do.

Additional skills which may benefit anyone considering a job as an ESD consultant include:

  • Broad knowledge of one or multiple sustainability principles including Green Building Design
  • Knowledge of one or multiple ratings tools such as Green Star, NABERS, NatHERS, WELL, LEED and Basix
  • Knowledge of environmental issues, but also technological solutions, and relevant environmental legislation, policy and guidance
  • Proficiency in softwares such as IES-VE
  • Understanding of the design and construction lifecycle
  • Knowledge of the Building Codes of Australia and Australian Standards
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Ability to coordinate with other disciplines, and take on other people's viewpoints
  • Ability to use initiative, and think outside of the box

As an ESD/Sustainability consultant there is potential to gain experience and move into either technical, project or team leadership within a consultancy environment, step sideways into a contractor or take the leap into client-side project management, advisory or even development. Obtainment of further accreditations, such as Chartership, which you can apply for at the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), NER, and GSAP would improve your job prospects and help you progress in your career

With considerable experience you may be able to work in a freelance capacity, offering your technical skills and knowledge to a range of clients, or start up your own environmental engineering consultancy.
